wednesday, may 8, 2019. morning, everybody. nice to have you with us on a wednesday morning. unfortunately, it's happened again. >> it has. a scene all-too familiar in this country. small children running from their schools with their arms up. one week to the day after that shooting from north carolina. >> tops our news. the investigation into another school shooting. this time it happened just outside denver, colorado, just a few miles from columbine. the alleged gunmen both in custody this morning. in a moment we'll talk to a girl who was at her desk in that classroom when a man walked in and started shooting. first, fwchltgadi schwartz at t scene. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. >> reporter: one held down by an armed security officer, the other tackled by students inside a classroom as school is can semed for the rest of the week as the investigation continues. >> shooter in classroom 105.

>> reporter: a normal school day taking a terrifying turn in an instant. shots ringing out in two classrooms fired by two young suspects. >> i need medical here asap. >> reporter: the bullets started flying late in the school day. officials immediately putting the campus on lockdown. >> there's more gunshots coming from the office. >> reporter: the first police officers arriving within minutes. >> we did struggle with the suspects to take them into custody and they are in custody right now. >> reporter: in all, nine students were injured and taken to area hospitals. one of the victims died. he's been identified as 18-year-old kendrick castillo. according to witnesses, several students, including castillo, may have attempted to tackle one of the shooters before police arrived. >> we are going to hear about very heroic things that have taken place. >> reporter: one mom says her daughter was in the classroom where it happened, but she's safe now. >> she called me and she was hysterical and she told me there had been a shooting. >> reporter: outside the school, frantic parents desperate to find their kids. >> they heard the shootings and

he ran out and somebody got hit in the shoulder. >> reporter: the two suspects, 18-year-old devon erickson and a minor not yet identified. >> it wasn't until we got to this office where we were able to determine that one of the suspects was a female. >> reporter: tuesday's shooting, only seven miles away from columbine where 20 years ago two heavily armed students entered that high school killing 13 classmates. but this time the response was very different. >> we have numerous officers from not just our jurisdiction, but all surrounding jurisdictions on scene within minutes. >> reporter: the denver nuggets honoring the victims before last night's game. this small community still in shock as tragedy again strikes too close to home. investigators today will spend time searching both shooters' homes as well as a car they found here on the scene. back to you guys. >> all right, gadi schwartz, thank you so much. as this investigation moves forward, students who were

inside those classrooms are coming to terms with all that they've seen. nui was one of the she was at her desk when one of the shooters started firing. she's with us this morning along with her mother nyki. nui, i can't imagine what you saw, what you witnessed. how are you feeling this morning? how are you doing? >> it's been a rough couple of hours. i know in time everybody will hopefully be okay and i hope that i can help them start to be okay. >> nui, requecan you walk us th what happened yesterday? >> we were all in our ninth period classes. mine was miss harper's british literature. the shooter came in late. he walked to the other side of the classroom where we also had another door. and he opened the door. he walked back as if he was going to go back to his seat. then he walked back to the door and he closed it.

the next thing i know, he's pulling a gun and he's telling nobody to move. and that's when kendrick lunged at him and he shot kendrick, giving all of us enough time to get underneath our desks to get ourselves safe and to run across the room to escape. i want to thank brendon bailey, jackson gregory and lucas to be some of the kids that were brave enough to bring him down so that all of us could escape and all of us could be reunited with our families. >> sounds like those boys were so heroic in a moment they, too, must have been terrified. >> they were very heroic. i can't thank them enough. >> did you know the shooter before yesterday? >> i did.

i knew him for four years. and he was -- he was very kind to me, but i never -- i never thought that he would do something like this. >> did he go to that class? he had that class with you? >> he had that class with me. >> nyki, i can't even imagine how you feel as a mom. you get a call like this, you hear this report, you race to the school. what was going through your mind? what has this experience been like for you? >> a nightmare. it's just been so -- so hard. but i did get to hold my babies last night, and they're home with me now. it was an absolute nightmare. >> you have a son who's also a freshman at that school, as i understand it. nui, you said it was important for you to be back on that campus this morning to talk to us. why is it so important for you

quantico in virginia. good morning to you, sir. >> good morning, guys. we'll get to that and why we're here. let's talk about our severe weather going on. take a look at what's been going on in houston. a really dangerous situation. massive flooding is occurring there because we're seeing storms kind of park themselves over houston and it's causing flooding. water evacuations, high-water rescues are going on right for you. this will be continuing, especially in the houston area over the next several days. here's what we're looking at right now. we have severe thunderstorm watches for a good portion of texas. we've also got flash flood watches and warnings stretching from texas all the way into arkansas, parts of missouri and nebraska and kansas. 32 million people at risk today for especially strong storms, potential for tornadoes, hail, damaging winds. tomorrow, 10 million people at risk for the same kind of weather in the lower and mid-mississippi river valleys. we're looking at a lot of rain coming out of this system.

especially down through the lower mississippi river and back into eastern texas. some areas 6 inches of rain or more over the same areas through friday, which is going to cause a lot of flooding, airport delays, making its way all the way up into chicago over it is the next several days. guys, back to you. >> all right, al, thank you so much. also this morning, a bombshell concerning the president's taxes. a report by "the new york times" said to reveal ten years of his tax returns and said to reveal massive financial losses. nbc's white house correspondent kirsten welker joins us. good morning. >> good morning. >> good morning. great to see both of you. this is a big one. for weeks the white house has been locked in a standoff with congress over the president's tax returns. treasury secretary steve mnuchin refusing democrats' requests to turn them over making mr. trump the first president since the watergate era to decline to make his tax returns public. now there are new questions

about the president's wealth dating back decades before his run for presidency. this morning a bombshell report in "the new york times" is casting doubt on president trump's self-proclaimed wealth. "the times" reporting it has obtained years worth of previously unrevealed figures from the president's federal income tax returns. the tax information from decades before he was a candidate dicating the real estate mogul spent at least ten years in the red. reporting business losses totaling over $1 billion from 1985 to 1994. according to "the times" year after year, mr. trump appears to have lost more money than nearly any other individual american taxpayer. overall, "the times" reports, mr. trump lost so much money, he was able to avoid paying income taxes for eight of those ten years. nbc news has not independently reviewed the tax information. mr. trump has touted his skills as a business titan for decades, promoting "the art of the deal"

"the times" adding, it was able to match the information with publicly available irs data on top earners. well, clearly this story is touching a nerve with the president. he's up and tweeting about it this morning.

writing, real estate developers in the '80s and '90s more than 30 years ago were entitled to massive writeoffs and depreciation which would would show losses and tax losses in almost all cases. adding the very old information put out is a highly inaccurate, fake news hit job. so, he's on defense about this, as "the new york times" -- >> acknowledging losses on the one hand, apparently, but i guess taking issue with the amount of the losses. anyway, there's another escalation, the standoff between the white house and democrats over the mueller report. >> it is, savannah. this is about this remarkable standoff. overnight the justice department essentially threatening to ask the president to invoke executive privilege or to block the release of key portions of the mueller report if the democratically led house judiciary committee moves forward with a vote scheduled today to hold the attorney general in contempt for not releasing the full report. jerry nadler writing, this kind of obstruction is dangerous.

world needs ubers. >> it's going to be a nightmare. >> reporter: groups representing uber and lyft drivers say they're going on strike today in several cities from coast to coast. in new york it will last two hours, 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in atlanta, 12 hours. in los angeles and san diego, some drivers might log off their apps for 24 hours. >> i just think that's crazy but, you know, they're trying to get that money. >> reporter: drivers want higher pay to make a bigger percentage of the fares charged to customers. >> uber is putting profit over people. >> reporter: kevin says he's been driving with uber for years, but over time his earnings have plunged while he continues to pay for his own gas, car maintenance and insurance. >> well, i'm going on strike because i want the -- uber to sit and see what is the problem. they're the only one that can fix it. >> reporter: the strike comes as uber prepares to start selling shares to the public later this week. it's being billed as one of the largest niche public offerings in tech industry history valued

up to $91 billion. uber has not commented on today's strike, but says whether it's more consistent earnings, stronger insurance protections or fully-funded four-year degrees for drivers and their families, we'll continue working to improve the experience for and with drivers. as for lyft, it says drivers' hourly earnings have increased over the last two years. adding that on average, drivers nationwide earn over $20 per hour. it's unclear how many of those drivers plan to strike today, but passengers are bracing for a potentially chaotic commute. >> so, is it chaotic? right now we're in the window for the strike here in new york i'm looking at my app. i can see there are cars around the area. it's saying there's about a two to three-minute wait right now if you want to try and get a car. it appears some drivers are not going through the strike right now. of course, the impact could be different, different parts of the country and different times of the day. back to you guys. >> you're already here at work, joe, so come on in.

identified as 18-year-old kendrick castillo. according to several witnesses, several students, including castillo, may have attempted to tackle one of the shooters before police got there. the two suspects, an 18-year-old and a minor who has not been identified, were both taken into custody. a family of six including four children are dead this morning after a fire ripped through a new york city fire building. officials say the flames erupted in a fifth floor apartment in harlem. identities of the victims have not been released yet but officials say the children were between the ages of 3 and 11 years old. it's not clear yet how that fire started. the investigation is ongoing. breaking overnight. iran stepping away from parts of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal. the announcement comes amid rising tensions between iran and the united states. in a televised speech president rouhani said the country would continue enrichment of high level uranium.

good morning. it's wednesday morning. we are happy to have you wherever you are. >> yes, and don't forget to keep the my today plaza shout-outs coming. use the hashtag at the bottom of the screen. mytod mytodaypla sha. let's start with the news at 8:00. young survivors, parents, teachers are dealing with the horror of yet another school shooting. it happened yesterday outside denver. nbc's gadi schwartz joins us with the very latest. gadi gaddi. they tell us that one of the shooters was actually subdued by an armed officer that was on scene. not an officer, a police officer rather, an armed security officer that the school had contracted out with. we now know one of the other gunmen have been stopped by students inside one of those classrooms. the sheriff department saying there are three people still in

critical condition, in intensive care. they're also saying that both the shooters are expected to be in court a little bit later today. right now, investigators are focusing on search warrant to go through the shooters' home as well as a vehicle that was found here. but a little bit earlier we spoke to a survivor in one of those classrooms who described seeing her classmates -- several of her classmates go after the shooter and the man with the gun and tackle him. she's crediting him with saving their lives. they were able to run away to safety from there. she's hoping they are remembered more so than the shooters. back to you guys. >> gadi schwartz, thank you very much. a bombshell report overnight raising new questions about president trump's taxes and his image as a successful businessman. got from ted robbins, who is still my friend. a piece of advice i give every chance i get. you need to dream big, extravagant, borderline unrealistic dreams. and it was given to me what seems like a lifetime ago. ted and i met when i was at college, a lowly member of the student crew at our pbs station in arizona. he was an on-air reporter, someone i looked up to. i really admired him. i thought he was such a good writer and such a good producer. so smart. >> she was a gopher, essentially. she could run the cameras in the studio. she could go out into the field and carry things. she was happy to do whatever needed to be done, or at least she made you think she was happy to do whatever needed to be done. >> reporter: tv has changed a bit since our days back in arizona, and ted stopped by for

a behind-the-scenes look here. remember we had those big videotape decks? they were connected to the camera, and i would run in the heat, try to catch up with you. >> the u of a offered classes -- >> reporter: after months of working behind the scenes i convinced my bosses to give me a shot. i did a story and showed it to him and i started with a stand-up, which is when the reporters on camera are talking. and he said, you know, savannah, you should always start your story with your very best video. and if your best video is yourself, you're in trouble. >> the suspect is in custody. >> take this dog. >> who will grace the olympics wheaties box. >> reporter: i spent five years climbing the ranks. then i was accepted into law school and i found myself at a crossroads. here i had this opportunity to go to georgetown law school, which was my dream school. i was afraid if i quit tv news, what if i wanted to go back? i went to ted. he looked me in the eye.

he said, savannah, think big. >> think big. don't limit yourself to the things that you think may not be possible. what is it you want your life to look like? >> reporter: he was giving me permission to have a huge ambition and a huge dream for myself, and that was so foreign to me. i grew up as the kind of person who didn't want to be too big for my britches. here ted came along at this key moment when i had to make a decision and he says, think big. i remember you were the kind of teacher, you didn't suffer fools. if there were people that were coming in and thinking television news was like an acting job, you were not having it? >> right. i always figured out of a class of 25 people, five people were like really on it and five people should have been kicked out on the first day. >> reporter: ted continued to work in television, but years

later found himself as a turning he point of his own. >> i was thinking of going to law school, and i asked her. she just gave it right back to me. she said, think big. what is it you really want to do? i realized i didn't really want to go to law school. >> reporter: instead, ted transitioned from tv landing the ultimate job in radio as a supervising editor for npr. >> you are carrying this out? >> reporter: i don't think ted knows how wise he is and how much his words have meant. he made a huge impact on me at the moment i really needed it. i was young and trying to figure out what the right thing to do was in life. and he was there. he took the time. >> when i'm really, really proud of her is when she is doing a tough interview and asking tough questions. and her family, her two kids. it's just wonderful to see her living a full life >> reporter: here we are on the

>> no. they never listened to me once. >> i read a quote where somebody said, yeah, she sometimes had to get bossy? >> yeah, everybody knows each other really well. we didn't have to do rehearsal because everybody knows how each other works. my job a lot of times is to corral the group, to get them over to the couch so i could call action and we could get started. >> jenna was asking if the scene was improv that we just saw? >> yeah. >> was there a lot of that? >> liz and emily, the writers of the scrip, did an amazing job. you don't have a group of women that talented together and not allow them to play. we certainly did that. >> i also read that they said you are a little bit like your character in that you are at the planner of the group? >> i am so stressed with what this royal baby name is. i want to check this off the list. what is it? >> what do you think? >> i don't know. >> albert? >> albert? i don't know. >> alexander?

well, considering it is teacher appreciation week, it's appropriate that we're going to go back to chemistry class this morning. this is a bit more exciting than the one you may remember. kate the chemist is a professor at the university of texas. she is here with fun experiments in a moment. first, she sat down with karlie kloss to talk about her demonstrations fueling the next generation of chemists. >> you might say these kids in austin are in their element. cheering and clapping for, of all things, chemistry. >> let's say it together.

sublimation! >> the ringleader kate bieberdoffaka kate the chemist. >> does anyone know what kind of physical change that is 32-year-old kate got into science growing up in michigan. >> as a kid, were you into experiments? >> oh, yeah. my mom is an incredible woman. we had a huge green bowl and she would let us put like shampoo and conditioner and soap and stuff in there. food coloring once. after that we weren't allowed food coloring. >> reporter: now her live demos have taken her from the classroom to the tv studio with pops that have a purpose. >> when you are able to touch and feel it and see it, like a balloon of fire in front of your eyes, as a kid that has a huge impact? >> oh, yeah. there is two pieces to it. it's not the visual. obviously, it's the visual. but when you are in the room, you smell it. so if you feel the boom or you feel the heat that comes off, that can kind of invoke a way

for them to make that memory so i can actually teach them. >> it's a physical change. it's physical! let's go, you guys! >> reporter: kate hopes the reactions turn to passions. particularly among the young girls in the audience. >> studies show girls especially decide early on whether they think they are interested in it or if they think they can't be good at science. >> does that make you want to pull your hair out? i can't handle that. i hate that. it's right before puberty that it happens. these girls decided i am a math person or not a math person. but the problem is women are so hard on themselves. so if we already believe we are not a math person or not a science person and we get one wrong answer in class, that's it. that's all it takes. so it's hard to have that confidence. so i think whatever we can do to get into the middle schools and elementary schools and try to show girls like, hey, you can be feminine, you can be pretty and also love science and blowing stuff up. that's okay. >> reporter: a message at least one girl heard loud and clear.

>> i thought it was like boring math, but whenever i saw this i found out it was actually kind of fun. >> kate the chemist. kate is here. i would be a chemist if i had a teacher as exciting as you. she really resonated with you? >> she is incredible. showing how fun science can be and should be. especially to young girls. >> okay. good. we are going to do an experiment this morning. kate, what should we do? >> this is the oscillating clock reaction. dump that first solution here in the flask. so, yeah, don't splash. it's okay. so this first one just has hydrogen peroxide in it. it's not too concentrated. at home, 3%. in your second one, if you can open it. there we go. got it, got it, got it. they are both clear and colorless. this has potassium and sulfuric acid, very, very dilute. clear and colorless.

nothing happening. number three, jenna, go for it. this has three things in it. molanic acid, manganese and salt. it turns yellow. >> should we clear out of the way? >> what do we do? >> wow!
